Dear Students...

I want to tell you that I really enjoyed teaching you this semester. Usually. Both classes were filled with very special, interesting people and I will miss you very much (no sarcasm). The fact that we build our very own little international community through the course of 12 weeks is very unique indeed. It is not surprising, therefore, that it is sad when our community disbands and we feel a certain sense of loss. However, this is a good thing--you don't feel loss unless you have something good in the first place.

You all should feel very proud of yourselves. You are reading, writing, speaking, living, breathing, maybe even dreaming by now, in English. This is quite an accomplishment and your levels of fluency are impressive. Now is a good moment to reflect upon where you started and how far you've progressed. Even if the progress sometimes seems slow, it is progress nonetheless, I assure you. It doesn't matter how long it takes you to get there--so long as you get there! Some of us creep like turtles and others fly like eagles but we can all make it to the finish line if we set our minds to it. Here's a new idiomatic expression for you: We say "keep your eye on the ball." So stay focused, work hard, and you will achieve your goals. The only one you are racing against is yourself. G-d gave you your potential--its your job to achieve it and do good in this world.

For those of you staying in Houston, please come and visit me at the LCC (but I won't be working this summer) or email me or call (713-721-3460) to say hi. If you throw a party, invite me and I will try my best to come. Also, if you need anything while you are in Houston, and I can be of help, feel free to contact me. Former students often consult with me on their academic decisions as well as their parking tickets and baby questions! Should you have a legal issue, my husband is a good person to consult. If you lose my contact information, you can always call the LCC office and they'll know how to reach me. At the very least, you can remember my last name. That's Cin. C-I-N. Like cinammon. Or cinema.

For those of you continuing in the LCC or entering the university, I wish you loads of success. It won't be easy but with hard work and determination (and perhaps just a little bit of luck, as Stanley's father says) you will achieve your goals. The first course is the hardest...

For those of you returning home, I wish you a safe and pleasant journey and I hope you continue to learn and to practice, and I hope to see you in your country one of these days soon!

Finally, I want to wish all of you lives filled with blessings: health and happiness, love and laughter, success and failure (because we learn from failure), and most of all, the ability to recognize the good in our lives and overlook or overcome the bad.

Please keep in touch with me; I look forward to hearing all of your exciting news.
Love,
Holly

You will be able to rent boats at Huntsville. $10 CASH per boat, I understand. It's a lot of fun.

Have a great weekend, and while you're enjoying yourselves, please don't feel bad for me that I have to grade 100 papers. "I made my bed. Now I have to lay in it!"

See you bright and early Monday morning!

Friday Fun Day: Special Holes Edition

This Friday we will have a special fun day for the last two hours of class. We will have class in OB 301, the same as the last time.

I encourage you to bring food and snacks because what's a party without food? The theme for the party will be holes--so think holes when you think food (donuts? bagels?).

Also, I encourage you to be current on your reading of Holes. You will need it for the game that we're going to play. Remember, you're not in the Girl Scouts anymore!

Lunch on Thursday

Carole and I would like to go out to lunch with you on Thursday to Madras Pavilion, which serves Indian vegetarian cuisine. At lunch, they have a wonderful buffet which is inexpensive (or should I say 'cheap'?), plentiful, and delicious.

Let's arrange rides among us. I have a van, so I can take 6. Please post a comment if you will be coming so I can reserve a large table for us. Also, please let me know if you need a ride or if you can take others in your car.

Madras Pavilion is located at:
3910 Kirby Dr (between 59 and Richmond, on the west side of Kirby)
Houston, TX

A Note for You

Dear Students,

I was very impressed by those of you who read "Danny" and were able to participate in today's conversation with such ease. It demonstrates to me that you really understand what you're reading. From my end it is truly a pleasure not only to be able to discuss the readings with you but to see how much progress you're making in your reading skills.

For those of you who have not kept up with the reading, I cannot attest to your progress, unfortunately. As I said at the beginning of this course, my philosophy is that you improve your skills by practicing them. You improve reading by reading; listening by listening; writing by writing; and speaking by speaking. There is no luck in this equation. Progress comes from discipline and hard work. For those of you who have demonstrated it, you have all my respect.

Making Inferences: Some Extra Practice

http://testprep.about.com/od/englishlanguagetests/a/Inference.htm

Read the article about inferences and then see if you understand the implied meaning in the statements which follow. You can check your answers.

*"Flipping the bird" is an idiom which means the same thing as "giving the finger." When we say "giving the finger," you know we mean the middle finger.

Until then, I want to remind you about going to Call Lab in the morning tomorrow (Monday) to do your student evaluations. Please make sure to be on time for this. Idioms List

Places in Texas to Enjoy (an essay I wrote last summer)

There are several great places to visit in Texas if you want to have some summer fun. The first place I recommend is South Padre Island, which I wrote about in a separate piece on the blog, so I will not discuss it here (I can't find it, though!)

The second place my family and I love is Austin. Austin has a wonderful nightlife for those of you who love music. Original bands play nightly on Sixth Street, which is downtown. In fact, a lot of famous bands get their start there on Sixth Street. During the daytime there is also a lot to do and see. You can visit and tour the Texas State Capitol and wander around the campus of the University of Texas. For water activity, you can go to Zilker Park, where you will find Barton Springs, a natural pool of really, really cold water (icy yet refreshing!) the size of 2 football fields. In addition to the pool, at Barton Springs you will also see lots of college students and other Austinites scantily dressed. If you are thinking about getting a tattoo, you can see many on display there! For children, there is a train ride and playground as well as an outdoor theater that presents free performances throughout the summer (similar to Houston's Miller Theater). Finally, when you are at Zilker Park, you can rent a canoe or kayak and paddle along Town Lake.

Another great place to swim in Austin is Lake Travis. The beach is a bit rocky but the temperature of the water is just delightful. You can rent jetskis and boats at various spots along the lake. There is also a water rides park in that area (I forget the name, but you can google "waterpark Austin Lake Travis" to find it, I'm sure). Finally, when in Austin make sure to enjoy some chips and salsa, or an entire meal, at the Oasis restaurant, which overlooks all of Lake Travis. It's quite a sight. You will ask yourself if you are really in Texas.

The last place I must recommend to you today is about 45 minutes west of Austin, called Hamilton Pools. From the parking lot, you have to hike a short path and then you arrive in a swimming hole which feels like paradise (if not paradise, then maybe Hawaii). The pool extends out from a grotto (like a cave) and you can swim or just float in the cool turquoise water. We visited Hamilton Pools for the first time last year--it was the week after Hurricane Ike paid a visit to Houston--and we all agreed that we must return there again soon. So these are my recommendations so far, and when I think of others, I will let you know.

Spring Break Recommendations

I hope everybody is planning something wonderful for spring break. Spring is a phenomenal time to travel around Texas. The flowers are beginning to bloom and the weather is perfect. Here are my recommendations for you:

1. If you love the beach, go down to South Padre Island. It's 5 hours from Houston. The beach is NOTHING like Galveston. I went there for the first time last summer and was surprised by how beautiful it was. I will post my essay so you can read more about it in detail.

2. If you like to camp, there are many great places to go, and this is the time of year to do it because during the summer its too hot. In the Hill Country, which is the region west of Austin and near San Antonio, there are many wonderful state parks for hiking, fishing, boating, and camping. Garner State Park, Pedernales Falls, Inks Lake, and Enchanted Rock are all outstanding.

3. If you would like to camp in an absolutely awesome place, drive 10-12 hours west and go to Big Bend National Park. It's one of the best places in the country to see the stars because there are no cities for hundreds and hundreds of miles. It's a desert but there is a beautiful canyon that you can raft through--its calm and scenic and its a whole day trip--and there is a mountain range (called the Chisos Mountains) with some spectacular hiking.

4. If you would like to head east, then I recommend New Orleans for a day or two (a 5-6 hour drive) and then continue east to northwestern Florida (4 hours past N.O.). The beaches there are as white as snow and the water is emerald green.

5. For a short trip, Austin is always a great idea. There is a lot to do and see in Austin as well as the surrounding area (like the state parks I mentioned above).

If you would like to run your plans by me (discuss them and get my opinion), I would be more than happy to help you!

Please let us all know what you're planning to do...

Have an amazing weekend!

I hope you had fun today. I did. I love games!

But the LCC isn't Camp Fun and Games. At the LCC, our goal is to build your language skills! Our philosophy is that if you take a non-English speaker and make him learn 10 words a day, he will become an English speaker!

So please be prepared for next week:
Monday
USA Today article
Holes vocabulary test, 1-6
We will discuss Holes on Monday

Tuesday
Be prepared to discuss the chapter on psychology in RS. You should read it twice before Tuesday and complete the exercises (all of this is on the schedule).

Your MIDTERM reading exam will be on MAIN IDEAS. If you don't complete the chapter on main ideas and PRACTICE this, you will not pass the test. Usually.

Your MIDTERM vocabulary exam will be on USA TODAY (list one) and Holes, chapter 7.

I will give you the vocabulary you will need next week for the MIDTERM listening test.

You must complete all of your blog assignments before midterm. If you don't, you will receive an F (which means "fail," not "fun") on the section of the report card that says "completes assignments."

Answer the following questions:

1. What kind of labels have you given yourself in your life, and why? Have they been helpful or harmful in your opinion?

2. What labels have been given to you by others? Did they help you or hurt you?

Sharing Your Cultural Perspective (due Wednesday, 2/10)

In the interviews we heard with the two ex-smokers, Pat and Donna, Pat's parents knew that he smoked, but Donna kept her smoking a secret from her parents as long as she could. Can you think of any reasons for this difference? In your culture, is it more acceptable for men to smoke than it is for women?

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Dear Students,

I really do want you to have a great weekend. I hope you believe me. Also, I want to tell you that I'm really enjoying both classes. I see that you are adjusting to the work and working hard, and this makes me very happy. I look forward to a lot of fun with you.

Nevertheless...a few reminders about homework:
1. Please complete the blog assignment that says "due Friday." Friday is today in case you were confused! I will post a new blog assignment that will be due next week.

2. Please be ready to discuss the "Cocaine" article on Monday. I'm sorry that we didn't manage to do it today. This is not new homework!

3. In RS, read the biology chapter on Immunity (pp.291-299, I believe), and complete the exercises. Remember to skim the article first to understand the general idea before you go back and read more carefully. Remember to read ACTIVELY, sitting up with pen in hand! Be ready with this for Tuesday, although we might not get to discuss it until Wednesday.

4. Please begin thinking about and preparing for your presentations. The point is the presentation. Your data does not have to be outstanding.

5. Of course, don't forget to keep learning your vocabulary words!!! There will be a test on list two next week. Also, I will give you a test on context clues some time next week.

If you want to contact me, email me: holly_cin@yahoo.com

Again, have a great weekend!

Sharing Your Cultural Perspective (due Friday, 2/5)

For centuries, Western medicine has treated the body and paid almost no atention to the mind. As Professor Cash stated, health-care professionals are now starting to understand that the mind plays a powerful role in the health of the body. How does traditional medical practice in your culture view the connection between the mind and the body? And how does this view affect the way doctors and other health-care givers treat patients?

Please post your answer as comments to this post.
