Answer ONE of the following questions:

1. Binet's test was designed to identify "dull" children. Do you think children should be told that they're bright or dull? Why or why not?

2. Do you know anybody who is very intelligent in some ways but not in others? Explain.

3. Remember what the lecturer said about "street smarts." Do you have a term for this in your language? Give an example of "street smarts" from your culture.

Your MIDTERM reading exam will be on MAIN IDEAS. If you don't complete the chapter on main ideas and PRACTICE this, you will not pass the test. Usually.

Your MIDTERM vocabulary exam will be on USA TODAY (list one) and Holes, chapter 7.

I will give you the vocabulary you will need next week for the MIDTERM listening test.

You must complete all of your blog assignments before midterm. If you don't, you will receive an F (which means "fail," not "fun") on the section of the report card that says "completes assignments."

Ruth and the man in her story (the dunce/genius) both gave themselves labels early in life. Though usually negative, labels can also be positive. In either case, they are powerful.

Sharing Your Cultural Perspective (due Wednesday, 2/17)

Answer ONE of the following questions:

1. Is there a high incidence of CVD in your country? If yes, which risk factors do you think are responsible? If not, why not, in your opinion?

2. Do you know anyone who fits the Type A personality description? Which type are you? (You can google "Type A personality" to get more information.)

3. Do you think that you're at risk for CVD? Are there any changes that you could make in your lifestyle that would decrease your risk of CVD?

Friday Fun Day Tomorrow

As a reminder, tomorrow classes will meet in Oberholzer (OB) 301A/B. Take the steps up to the third floor and you will see the rooms.

First class: 8:30-9:30
Second class: 9:30-10:30
Party/Games: 10:30-12:30

Please feel free to bring food and drinks. There is a stove so we can heat up food. I will bring plates, napkins, and cups.

Also, please bring a poem, song, or story about LOVE from your language/country/culture to share with the class. You will be asked to present/perform as a group.

Sharing Your Cultural Perspective (due Wednesday, 2/10)

In the interviews we heard with the two ex-smokers, Pat and Donna, Pat's parents knew that he smoked, but Donna kept her smoking a secret from her parents as long as she could. Can you think of any reasons for this difference? In your culture, is it more acceptable for men to smoke than it is for women?

Dear Students,

I really do want you to have a great weekend. I hope you believe me. Also, I want to tell you that I'm really enjoying both classes. I see that you are adjusting to the work and working hard, and this makes me very happy. I look forward to a lot of fun with you.

Nevertheless...a few reminders about homework:
1. Please complete the blog assignment that says "due Friday." Friday is today in case you were confused! I will post a new blog assignment that will be due next week.

2. Please be ready to discuss the "Cocaine" article on Monday. I'm sorry that we didn't manage to do it today. This is not new homework!

3. In RS, read the biology chapter on Immunity (pp.291-299, I believe), and complete the exercises. Remember to skim the article first to understand the general idea before you go back and read more carefully. Remember to read ACTIVELY, sitting up with pen in hand! Be ready with this for Tuesday, although we might not get to discuss it until Wednesday.

4. Please begin thinking about and preparing for your presentations. The point is the presentation. Your data does not have to be outstanding.

5. Of course, don't forget to keep learning your vocabulary words!!! There will be a test on list two next week. Also, I will give you a test on context clues some time next week.
