I hope everybody is planning something wonderful for spring break. Spring is a phenomenal time to travel around Texas. The flowers are beginning to bloom and the weather is perfect. Here are my recommendations for you:
1. If you love the beach, go down to South Padre Island. It's 5 hours from Houston. The beach is NOTHING like Galveston. I went there for the first time last summer and was surprised by how beautiful it was. I will post my essay so you can read more about it in detail.
2. If you like to camp, there are many great places to go, and this is the time of year to do it because during the summer its too hot. In the Hill Country, which is the region west of Austin and near San Antonio, there are many wonderful state parks for hiking, fishing, boating, and camping. Garner State Park, Pedernales Falls, Inks Lake, and Enchanted Rock are all outstanding.
3. If you would like to camp in an absolutely awesome place, drive 10-12 hours west and go to Big Bend National Park. It's one of the best places in the country to see the stars because there are no cities for hundreds and hundreds of miles. It's a desert but there is a beautiful canyon that you can raft through--its calm and scenic and its a whole day trip--and there is a mountain range (called the Chisos Mountains) with some spectacular hiking.
4. If you would like to head east, then I recommend New Orleans for a day or two (a 5-6 hour drive) and then continue east to northwestern Florida (4 hours past N.O.). The beaches there are as white as snow and the water is emerald green.
5. For a short trip, Austin is always a great idea. There is a lot to do and see in Austin as well as the surrounding area (like the state parks I mentioned above).
If you would like to run your plans by me (discuss them and get my opinion), I would be more than happy to help you!
Please let us all know what you're planning to do...
