Sharing Your Cultural Perspective (due Thursday, March 4)

Answer ONE of the following questions:

1. Binet's test was designed to identify "dull" children. Do you think children should be told that they're bright or dull? Why or why not?

2. Do you know anybody who is very intelligent in some ways but not in others? Explain.

3. Remember what the lecturer said about "street smarts." Do you have a term for this in your language? Give an example of "street smarts" from your culture.

  1. 1.I think children should not be told they are bright or dull. Because every person has something he is good at and his shortcome. nobody can identify who is smart or who is dull. Maybe you are good at thinking questions, maybe you are good at sports. If children are told that they were dull, they will lose their confidence in his future. so don't do that.
2.Like many athletes. they are good at sports, but they are not good at studying.
    3. no we don't have this term in my language.

  2. I think children should not be told that they’re bright or dull because it will against their self-confidence even if it gives them a better understanding of themselves. Sometimes, you always praise him/her as "bright", he/she would be proud. If you call him/her as"dull",he/she will get discouraged if you criticize them too often. So, that’s not a good idea.

  3. I think children shouldn't be told "bright" or "dull" because it affects personal improvement. Every one has different ability. Some one can sing a song. Some one is successful at Math. If you make classification, you make a mistake.

  4. I think children shouldn't be told that they are bright or dull. I think Each child has each talent. I have never seen a perfect person. Some children have a language talent, and others have a mathematical principle. If a child hears that he/she was dull, he/she will be a dumm really.
    2. My friend is smart. He studied hard, and he working Samsung ,which is one of the best company in Korea. However, he is so clumsy. when he played soccer, nobody wanted to play with him at same team.
    3. I am not sure, but I think "be quick witted" is similar to "street smart".

  5. Well, in my opinion children should be told that they are bright. The reason is to encourage them in their future life. Moreover, to help them think in a positive way.

  6. In my opinion, sometimes,if your children fail in something, you need to boost thier spirits by telling them that they're bright. However, the children mustn't be told "dull" because it could affect on their self confidents in the negative way.

  7. 1.I think children should not be told that they're bright or dull. The major reason is there is no one could identify children who were bright or dull in the round. Binet's test could identify children who are likely to fail in school in a certain degree. However, it could not predict children who are likely to achieve in career. A "dull" label would make children lose their confidence, and do not try their best to do anything.

  8. I think the chidren should not be told that they're bright or dull.Frist, the main problem is how you check a chlid is dull or bright? Test? His/her behavior? I think God is fair, every children play an important role in this world. Although, his IQ is 50, he also can be a famous people, in China,a boy is a retardation, but he is a cantor in the concer.
2 for example, many famous militarists, they just know how to control the war and they don't know how to relax their lives, when they retire, they don't know how to live .some of them. they get sick or cancer when they retire.

  9. I think children shouldn’t be told that they are bright or dull because it is unfair to judge them while they’re young especially to judge them as dull. Who know? They might be bright when they are older. If we consider that they are dull, it might less their confidence and it can make them feel that they cannot do anything. I think we should not push the feeling of being different from others to the children by label them as dull or bright. We should help them to feel comfortable and be always ready to learn.

  10. I met the boy in gifted talent school. At that time, he was just 5 years old. A math teacher handed out a paper to students who were very gifted. There were ten problems - such as "Rotate the following figure to 45 degrees," or "Rotate the following figure to 90 degrees and then flip" - about the rotation and flip of figures on the paper. 30 minutes were given for them, but he solved all the problems only within five minutes. He spent most of the time -five minutes - not on thinking but on drawing. He was only five years old. Ordinary students have difficulty trying one of these questions. Other gifted talent students spent 30 minutes, but some of the students hadn't finished them. I was very amazed. However, he had weak social skills and mental problems. After a while, one of his friends touched his pencil case. He really dislike other people's touching on his stuff, so he threw an object, and the mirror which was on the wall was broken. I was frightened by his action. I asked his mom whether he read fiction that could make him feel warm or not. His mom said that he read only nonfiction, and added that he thought fiction is not worthwhile. He was interested in only knowledge. I thought that he should have read many stories that could teach him love, and I was proud of my son who made good friends.

  11. 1. I totally disagree calling a child dull because everyone functions accordingly whether it meets our standard or not. Fortunately, some people are dull, therefore their dullness helps to keep a balance in the world where there is little time invested into other people. Although one may be dull, they nonetheless are quite able just as anyone else.
    2. Iknow several people that come to mind that are in such states, yet each of them are still able to produce results but it takes them a little more time than others.
3.In Taiwan you are able to bargain for cheaper items. In order to do this, you first must know how, and knowing how means asking the right people and through experience, which none of this is found in school. This is one way of being street smart in my country

  12. 1. It depends on a child. If a child is bright, he/she should be told because it encourages him/her. However, if a child is dull, he/she souldn't be told because it could make a child to be a self-critical person.

    2. When I was in hish school, one of my calssmates was very bright especially he had a talented in cooking. He was very smart as Davinch, and he was always the outstanding student in the school. However, he was interested in cooking, not in studying(his testing score was always so high). His ambition was to become the best chef of the world. He often showed up his cooking skills, so he often brought it to the school. My classmates, the teachers, and I thought that he was the weird person we'd never seen before. Anyway, he had a very serious shorcoming that was he couldn't make a friend! He was more than smart, he was a genius, but he was a kind of crazy guys. When he brought the food that was made by him, nobody didn't want to eat, but his food was TOO delicious and addictive.

3.I'm not sure, but my mom always tells me that if I had a car accident, I must not get off the car, just call the police, don't talk with a stranger even though that is my fault. Because a stranger could be a psyco. Is that kind of street-smarts?????

  13. In my opinion children are not bright or dull. They learn in a different way, some of them faster than others, but it doesn’t mean that the slow child is not intelligent. Maybe this kid has different abilities that you cannot measure by an intelligence test. As we learned in past assignments, if we labeled a child as a dull kid, it could be the worst mistake because they will conditionate their capacity of knowledge.

  14. i think even though you think that the child is dull u should tell him that he is a bright. that is not cheating, you just do that to encourage him/her to keep on his/her life and pass him/her some positive thinking
in addition, its big mistake to tell a child that he is a dull
