Sharing Your Cultural Perspective (due Friday, 2/5)

For centuries, Western medicine has treated the body and paid almost no atention to the mind. As Professor Cash stated, health-care professionals are now starting to understand that the mind plays a powerful role in the health of the body. How does traditional medical practice in your culture view the connection between the mind and the body? And how does this view affect the way doctors and other health-care givers treat patients?

Please post your answer as comments to this post.

  1. Many researches around the world are based on the effects of the mind over the body. Researchers are demonstrating the power and importance of a healthy mind. For any reason, your body could show what your mind is thinking. Sometimes we can avoid it, but we know that something is happening inside and we feel different. This is what the power of the mind means.
In my culture, practices of relaxation are more and more common in hospitals, especially in people suffering critical illness. Many doctors think the mind could deter the medicines effects or produce depression, which is the worst enemy of the body when it's facing an illness. The power of what a patient is thinking about his/her future could help him/her to fight against the illness and support the immune system to be better. Doctors always try to motivate the patient to think positively. Also, they strive to treat the patients in an encouraging way. For example, they try to use words that make them feel more relaxed.

  2. In Korea, there is a traditional medical book, Donghuibogam, written by Joon Huh, the herb doctor. It says, “Because all human diseases are caused by a habit of eating and sexual life, if you want to be cured, cultivate your mind first, and then take a medicine.” Most Korean ancestors consider that mind outweigh medicine. There are still many herb doctors in Korea. Also, common people regard shaman as therapist. They also think that an exorcism can treat diseases disable to be seen. A research written in 1920 shows that at that time, Most Korean diseases, about four fifths of all diseases, had been being treated by shaman, grandmother, or mother. I was very surprised after reading this article. Today, many studies support the fact that mind outweigh medicine, so many doctors including herb doctors is using mind relaxation as a part of treatment.

  3. Long time ago, there were a lot of folk remedy in Korea because many peaple who were sick could not treat. They did not have enough money for medicine. Although every folk remedy was not good treatment for them, many patients who treated diseases with folk remedy could get better. I think the reason that they could get better is their mind. Their good mind affected their body. There are two medicine in Korea. One is Western medicine and the other one is Oriental medicine. When I am sick, I go both medicine. When I go to Oriental hospital, doctor treats me with acupuncture and cautery, when I go to western hospital, doctor treat with shot or another way. However, they say same thing. That is relaxation and taking a rest.

  4. Many doctors around the world say that if you think positivitely, your body will understand it and help you cure your illness. Many researches support this idea. To give an example, Leon Armstrong who is known by everyone is a famous racer. He was cancer. He beat cancer by thinking positively. After then, he wrote a novel about cancer and now he helps people who are cancer cure the illness. This shows us the power of mind.
In Turkey, nowadays, many people make an exercises to avoid illness, such as plates and yoga. People think that you cannot become well not only thinking positively but also developing your body against illness. In addition, in Turkey, many different medicinal plants are grown. People who live in Turkey make traditional drugs with them. Also, they use these drugs instead of medicines.

  5. In my country, alternative treatment methods have been having very important results in the treatment of cancer and many diseases. America, Russia, China and in many country of the world have been surveying alternative methods of cancer treatment. The treatment is called XP Tonic Sls which is completely natural and herbal studies. When the herbalists implement the methods, they used some plants, roots and flowers for processing the treatment with combining multi therapy which are chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc. In this treatment, body defense system increases the capacity to repair itself and immune system can be set of itself again. On the other hand, people who don’t have any disease can be used the Tonic. To increase resistance and prevent possible disease for decades are another important quality of the tonic. Therefore in my country people choose natural treatment in the long time disease.

  6. There is a strong relationship between the mind and the body , the mind controls all of the body actions and movements , for example , if you want to rise your hand the first thing happens is that your mind -the non physical part of the brain- sends a command through nerves which attached to the muscles of the hand which are resposible of the movement , then hand rises by the reaction of the muscles to the command . I will not talk deeply about how exactly that happens .In general, the mind is the main processor in the human body just like the microprocessor in the computer.
when someone get ill the brain analyse the reason of the illness e.g in the flu the brain knows that a flu virus attacked the body , the brain sends a command to the white blood cells which are responsible of defence to fight that strangers and git red of them , here, the immunity system starts his mission.
I know i talk too much but i am trying to make it clear ( the immunity system take the orders from the brain to work ).
Well , lets talk about the culture , each one try to show that in his country everything happens perfectly , i will talk frankly , depending on my special knowledge about the hospitals in my country , they don't even know how to talk to the patients , they dont have a way to tell you about your disease , this happened with someone i know : he went to the doctor to make a general medical check , because he wanted to take the drivers license test , he was twinty one years old , he was sporty guy , healthy , and funny . When the doctor saw the blood lab report he said to him : Oh man you've got a blood cancer , its better for you to try to live happily for tow months before you die ! what do you think happened ? six months later he died!
What happened to him when he knew about his disease ?
In my opinion if he didn't know about his disease, he might be alive until now , but when he knew, he was disappointed, and only one thing dominated his feelings, that was the wrong imagination about cancer that it can't be treated, so his subconscious mind was telling him that it's over , that made his immunity system not working well , because the part which is resposible of asking the immunity system to work was already hopeless
I think that case is good example to know the relationship between the mind and the body, and to know how to tell someone about his disease if you know that and he does not know

  7. It developed in Korea and came from an ancient medicine called the Oriental medicine. There are several types of treatment such as acupuncture, fire cuppung, herb and diet therapy.
First of all, acupuncture is the treatment of a person's illness or pain by sticking small needles into their body at certain places. The oriental doctor finds acupuncture point and then pricks. It is usually no pain. (but I hate a needle and it was painful for me)
Fire cupping treatment is that just put the lights on Fire cupping treatment thin air, and then paste swells swell in place of the discharge or pay one dokhyeoleul suck.
Herb is already mentioned by Jung, herb has been proved its effectiveness, and it really worked for me, so i strongly believe.
Diet is also well-know therapy. The oriental doctor put a patient on the diet therapy, for example, eating multigrain rice is healthier than eating plain white rice.
Among the these four lists, in my opinion, the most significant key of fitness is the Diet therapy. Therefore, I always eat multigrain rice, and black bean tea.(black bean is very good for losing hair!)
However, when all is said and done, there's nothing better than thinking positively. :)

  9. The doctors said there is a connection between mind and body. The most known connection is that in psychological. Sometimes when people get shocked of an incident that affects on their health. For example, my roommate’s uncle was healthy. Suddenly he heard about his son who arrested by the police and got judge for three years in prison. He fainted and went to hospital. He had stayed in the hospital for one month and his situation had got worse and worse. Then the doctors started to cure him in two ways psychologically and medically. The psychological way was more effective than the other. The doctor said to his family that because he had shocked, he should have got motivation to get better. In conclusion, that was the obvious example that explains the connection between the state of mind and the state of body.

  10. Many doctors or hospitals in Thailand currently use Thai traditional medication as an alternative medicine aside from the conventional medicine for their patients. The conventional medicine focuses on treatment organ that is worn-out to be good again. So, it cannot be used to protect us from health problem. Nevertheless, the Thai traditional medication focuses on improving a normal healthy part to be healthier. Thai people believe that illness is caused by an imbalance in the body, mind, and spirit. The elements of traditional Thai medicine are nutritional remedies, herbal remedies, spiritual practice, and traditional Thai massage. Nutritional remedy is focus on diet. It emphasizes what people should eat especially natural food. Herbal remedy is about treatment by herb without chemical synthetic. Spiritual practice is a primarily meditation and the Buddhist principle. This can help one to be calm and relax that will improve balancing of the body. The last, traditional Thai massage, forms the backbone of the physical treatment. It emphasizes pressing, compression, and stretching techniques, rather than rubbing techniques using palms and fingers as in western-style massage. The Thai massage will distribute energies throughout the nervous system in order to create a harmony of physical energy flows along the Sen (energy lines).
Therefore, if we can do all of the four elements of traditional medicine, our body balance will be improved and we can protect ourselves from many health problems.

  12. This is rather traditional chinese medicine:
    Yin and yang
Traditional Chinese medicine stems from Taoism, a Chinese philosophy. It states that the universe, and everything in it, is underpinned by two complementary and yet opposing forces, yin and yang, rather like the mathematical symbols plus and minus. The sun, day, heat and solid matter come under yang; the moon, night, cold and emptiness come under yin. They can be thought of as complementary pairs - one can't exist without the other. Although they are opposites, the boundary between them is fluid and ever changing, in the same way that day shades into night and night into day. Cosmic order is considered to be in balance if yin and yang are balanced and this is just as true for a healthy Organ. TCM aims to rebalance these complementary and opposing forces, as necessary.
    Qi and the body's energy
TCM thinks of the human body as a dynamic energy system, in which a particular kind of energy or life force, known as qi, is created and transformed. It runs through the whole body, along particular channels called meridians. The free movement of this energy is vital to good health.
    The Five Elements
The Five Elements is a way of understanding the world in terms of cycles, such as growth and decay. The elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water are each associated with one of the five major Organs. Each Organ supports another Organ, but is controlled by a third. For example, Liver (Wood) supports the Heart (Fire), but is controlled by the Lung (Metal). If there is something wrong with this interaction between the Organs, ill-health is likely to follow. Other parts of the body, such as the eyes, ears, mouth, nose, and tongue, are each associated with a particular Organ, and so are our emotions.
    The Organs
    Liver
    Element: Wood.
Supports the Heart (Fire) and is controlled by the Lung (Metal).
Connected with the eyes and tendons.
    Emotion: anger.
    Heart
    Element: Fire
Supports the Spleen (Earth) and is controlled by the Kidney (Water).
Connected with the tongue and blood.
    Emotion: panic.
    •Spleen
    Element: Earth.
Supports the Lung (Metal) and is controlled by the Liver (Wood).
Connected with the mouth and muscles.
    Emotion: pensiveness.
    •Lung
    Element: Metal.
Supports the Kidney (Water) and is controlled by the Heart (Fire).
Connected with the nose, skin and hair.
    Emotion: sadness.
    •Kidney
    Element: Water.
Supports the Liver (Wood) and is controlled by the Spleen (Earth).
Connected with the ears and bones.
    Emotion: fear.
it just a little information about it. because i feel there are too much.

  13. " A healthy body in a healthy body "
Many researchers studies have shown that stressful life events, from the death of a loved one to the loss of a job, are linked to an increase in certain health problems, particularly heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Many people assume that stress leads to cancer as well. Before three or four years ago the shares market went down in Saudi Arabia. It was a disaster. People lost their money, they sell their houses and lost jobs. What we know about stress is that when we are confronted with a frightening situation, we mobilize our brain and our body to deal with it. The acute (immediate) stress response turns on the autonomic (self regulating) nervous system, which controls basic functions like breathing and heart rate; they go on without your thinking about them. Therefore many people got sick, they had cancer, heart disease, nerve breakdown, and most of them e died. Our government tried to help many people. Up to now people are trying to get better by doing exercise, some of them travel and some prefer going to spa’s to relax.

  15. People with good emotional health are aware of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. They have learned healthy ways to cope with the stress and problems that are a normal part of life. They feel good about themselves and have healthy relationships.Your body responds to the way you think, feel and act. This is often called the “mind/body connection.” When you are stressed, anxious or upset, your body tries to tell you that something isn’t right. For example, high blood pressure or a stomach ulcer might develop after a particularly stressful event, such as the death of a loved one.
In my country some people believe that going to church is the best way to find the cure for their disease. However, a lot of sick people try to cure themselves by praying constantly. In some cases a lot of people get better just praying and believing in god's power without taking any medicine. Because of these results a lot of people are getting more often to church praying for a cure of their disease.

  16. In my culture, emotional health is the most important psychological factor to promote human health. Many researches have shown that the most important reason of bad mood is harmful to human health. It is not less than the health hazards of bacteria and viruses. Therefore, optimization of human emotions, to prevent the sustained negative emotions and intense negative emotions on human health is extremely important. Sound character is an important human health psychology to ensure that poor character is the health of people, especially the potential inherent in the psychology of psychological disorders. Bad habits and unhealthy lifestyle is a serious health hazard. Therefore, optimization of personality is to prevent bad habits and poor lifestyle the most fundamental psychological responses.

  17. In my culture traditional "doctors", have persuaded many people. They have used all their knowledge in psychology and make patients believe that everything that they say it's true.
Unfortunately some of these "doctors" are just charlatans and they are just interrested in having a profitable business, they don't really care about their patient's lives. Also some of them have used magical products so that they can make patients feel better, but just for a short time.
In brief,i agree that our mind has a powerful effect over our bodies. It can help us feel well or bad with ourselves.I think that the most important is to think positively and don't allow fake doctors take care of us.

  18. This is the relationship between a human body and its unique mind. Sometimes, mind can control your body, for example, I read a story about a people had cancer. The doctor told her, she just had 6 months can live. At first, she wanted to give up her life. But she thought she should use 6 months do some special things. So she went to her favorite country and traveled many places. She learned how play piano. She also tasted all kinds of food. The day after day, she found her cancer become disappear and felt very well. She came to see the hospital; the doctor said her cancer Symptoms reduced. They were very surprised and the doctor explained to her, her mind control her body, because she didn't scare the cancer, she had a great mood everyday. It can help her fight against the disease. Then her cancer became not serious. Anyway, for me, my religion is Buddhism. We believe mind is stronger than the body. Mind and body are independent. Mind like spirit, it can't disappear, and the body is not. If you have a strong faith, and you never give up, you must be successful. So i agree with mind has a powerful effect over our bodies!

  20. The Traditional Chinese Medicine thinks the mind always affect the body to a great extent. I know some conclusions. For example, indignation is bad for your liver. Excitement is bad for your heart. Yearning is bad for your spleen. Grief is bad for your stomach. Panic is bad for your kidney. Disquiet is bad for your lungs. However, I do not know the principle. It is too profound to I can understand. There are lots of Traditional Chinese Medical books. For instance, The Medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor, which is the one of the most famous Traditional Chinese Medical books.
